Arbitrator Orders HCA to Negotiate With SEIU Over Mandatory Flu Vaccination or Mask Policy

An arbitrator ordered Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) to bargain with SEIU Local 121RN and SEIU United Healthcare Workers over its 2009 mandatory policy that employees receive an H1N1 and seasonal flu inoculation or wear a surgical mask when working with patients.

The Riverside County Board of Supervisors voted to ratify the SEIU Local 721 contract, in which members gained overtime rights, limited furloughs and a fairness agreement among all county employees. Nurses played a key role in fighting to preserve services for residents of Riverside County.

The governor’s mandated furlough days continue to cause great anxiety and hardship to our state Registered Nurses. Each department, and at times each facility, have set up their own rules.
