An arbitrator ordered Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) to bargain with SEIU Local 121RN and SEIU United Healthcare Workers over its 2009 mandatory policy that employees receive an H1N1 and seasonal flu inoculation or wear a surgical mask when working with patients.

Carmen Cruise: a Force for Patients and Her Union

SEIU Local 721 nurses are proud to report that member participation in their RN Contract Campaign has resulted in a successful new contract for 2009–2011. The new deal covering 6,000 nurses includes significant wins for RN professional practice, quality care and patient safety.

Riverside County Workers Win New Agreement After Member Action Jump-Starts Contract Talks

Riverside County workers have an official memorandum of understanding. The Riverside County Board of Supervisors voted to ratify the SEIU Local 721 contract, in which members gained overtime rights, limited furloughs and a fairness agreement among all county employees. Nurses played a key role in fighting to preserve services for residents of Riverside County. 

Local 1000 Nurses Asked to Track Mandated Furlough Days

The governor’s mandated furlough days continue to cause great anxiety and hardship to our state Registered Nurses. Each department, and at times each facility, have set up their own rules. In many of the 24/7 facilities RN’s are told they CANNOT use furlough days. So, it is clear that those facilities are working the RN’s without pay.

Safety Conditions Melt Down at Alameda County Medical Center's Fairmont Hospital

"I can honestly say I felt safer working in the jail [where I used to work] than I do here." That's the word from Valery Myers, a nurse and SEIU 1021 member at Alameda County's Fairmont Hospital, who joined with her co-workers on Wednesday, April 8 in a rally against unsafe working conditions at the hospital.
