SEIU Nurses Set Priorities at 2010 Nurse Legislative Conference
More than 125 nurses from six different SEIU locals attended the 2010 legislative conference
SEIU nurses from around the state gathered at the 2010 Nurse Alliance of California Legislative Conference May 4 and 5 to hear updates on healthcare reforms taking place in Washington, D.C., and Sacramento, and how that will impact our patients and our daily work as RNs. “Last year, we called the code on healthcare,” said Ann Kempski, SEIU’s director of Health Policy. “Now we can say it’s in the progressive care unit—not perfect, but improving.”

A new study released from Health Services Research shows the California nurse-patient staffing ratio law law is having a dramatic effect on our society, is preventing the deaths of thousands of people, and has improved nurse retention in California. “We can all be proud, this study clearly shows the dramatic impact that nurse citizens can have,” said Local 1021 RN Lorraine Thiebaud (pictured).

SB 1111, a dangerous bill that was a misguided “reform” effort to deal with the problems of the BRN (Board of Registered Nursing) was defeated in Sacramento. Our SEIU Nurse Alliance of California is committed to safe patient care and believes the BRN needs to be improved, but efforts such as SB 1111 are clearly not the way to do it.

AB 1083, an SEIU supported bill that would require hospitals to conduct annual reviews of their security and safety assessments, was signed into law by Governor Schwarzenegger on October 11th! It has officially been filed with the Secretary of State's office.

Governor Schwarzenegger has moved to replace four members of the Board of Registered Nurses (BRN), an action that many SEIU nurses find alarming. The governor's moves may end up jeopardizing patient care in California, given that Schwarzegger has made it clear he wants government to play a bigger role in regulating the practice of registered nursing.
