H1N1 train the trainer smallerThe SEIU Nurse Alliance of California held two H1N1 'train the trainer' classes in October. Nurses from Local 1021 participated in a session in San Francisco on October 5th, and on October 15th the Southern California classes were attended by nurses from Locals 721, 121RN and UHW. Nurses in attendance received the latest information on airborne transmissible diseases (ATD) standards, and the best ways to protect against the spread of the H1N1 virus. Attendees also earned 7 Continuing Participation Units (CEUs) for their time well spent.

New H1N1 Virus Update

SEIU nurses are backing the first and only comprehensive scientific review control that offers guidelines to protect healthcare workers with a suspected or confirmed case of H1N1 (Swine Flu).

An Institute of Medicine (IOM) panel has concluded that the lowest level of protection for healthcare workers is a fitted NIOSH certified respirator (NIOSH N95 respirator pictured above).

A quick response by SEIU nurses kept the California Department of Public Health from weakening the new Aerosol Transmissable Disease Standard on the eve of its official implementation.

Victory! Cal OSHA Adopts New Aerosol Transmissible Disease Standard

The California OSHA Standards Board adopted, by a 6 to 0 vote, the nation’s first workplace standard designed to protect healthcare and other workers from aerosol (airborne and droplet) transmitted diseases.
